I am an Ontario College of Teachers Certified teacher with Specialist Qualifications in Special Education. I've been a Special Education teacher for 20+ years.
I have a Master's of Education from University of Toronto and I am trained at the Associate Level in Orton Gillingham reading intervention.
Structured Literacy uses systematic and explicit instruction that directly teaches specific skills to struggling readers and writers. Structured literacy takes the guessing out of learning to read and write. It's the gold standard approach for students with dyslexia as well as those who are struggling with reading or writing.

This approach directly teaches the structure of language from the most basic building blocks of sounds (phonemes) to their written representation (graphemes).
As the student progresses and learns these skills, they are introduced to more complex skills including the structure of sentences (syntax) and the building blocks of words (morphemes).
This approach is systematic and explicit.
There is also an important multisensory component of each lesson which is essential to help students learn to map sounds and their letter representations. Students use a tactile surface and move their bodies to help in this process.

Lessons are tailored individually, based on the specific diagnostic needs of each student. Subsequent lessons target gaps and skills that need to be learned. Students master one skill before moving on to the next.
This Orton Gillingham approach offers exceptional breadth, depth, and flexibility.
Students practice adding, deleting and substituting syllables and phonemes orally. Additionally, they segment and blend phonemes alongside corresponding graphemes.
Students learn to read and write single sounds, blends and welded sounds. They learn about morphology (prefixes and suffixes), syllable division and more...
When a child struggles with decoding, fluency is compromised and the read inaccurately. The heightened effort required to decode erodes at their comprehension. Structured Literacy masters one skill with fluency before adding complexity.
Once a student can read with less effort, they can focus their attention on meaning. This becomes more important as students approach middle school and high school.

No. In fact all students benefit from Structured Literacy instruction. However, research has shown that this type of intervention is essential for students who struggle with reading and writing.
For the best results, twice per week is recommended.
